Many people think that eternal life means living forever, spending an eternity with God.
But Jesus tells us something else about eternal life.
Eternal life is not so much about living forever, but eternal life is something else.
John 17:3 says that eternal life is knowing God.
In these words of Jesus, knowing God does not refer to simply having met God.
Here to know God in the original means to know God in the most intimate way. The image of the original word gives the notion of a physical relationship between a husband and wife.
This is why eternal life is knowing God in the most intimate way possible, and if I know God, it is because I have passed through the death of my being.
Many Christians mistakenly think that the new birth means being reborn after having died spiritually because of sin.
But that's not what the Bible says at all.
When we are born again, we are born anew as a result of the death of our 'self'. This is what Jesus called "dying to self".
That's why without this death to self, this death of our " self ", there can be no new birth, because rebirth implies a prior death.
Have you triggered the death of your " self "? The death of your personality, of the person you used to be?
God has put His nature into you, into your spirit. But this nature needs to go from your spirit into your soul so that it can manifest itself in you, in your actions, your words and your decisions. You will never be able to make God's nature go into your soul until you have firmly decided to empty yourself of yourself.
Have you ever tried to fill a bottle that is already full? It's impossible until that bottle is emptied. Well, in the same way you need to empty yourself, so that you can transfer the nature of God that He has put into your spirit, into your soul.
Of course our transformation into the image of Christ is a process, and this process can only be set in motion if I have agreed to start putting to death the fruits of my flesh.
In this process, are you like Zacchaeus?
Zacchaeus wasted no time. As soon as he heard Jesus' words, he didn't hesitate. Zacchaeus immediately made the firm decision to give back 4 times as much to all those he had stolen from, but also to give half his possessions to the poor.
It didn't take Zacchaeus years to start changing his behaviour, to take the decision to start putting his "self" to death.
Are you like Zacchaeus, who wastes no time in changing your behaviour?
Changing, putting to death your flesh in certain areas doesn't necessarily take an enormous amount of time.
Too many Christians take years, even decades, to change their attitude in certain areas that the Holy Spirit has already shown them.
As a result, time passes, and satan rubs his hands watching these people waste precious time in God's plan for their lives.
Paul reminds us to "redeem the time". This means that time is precious, but it also means that time flies by every second and never slows down for us.
So don't waste any more time, shake off your flesh, shake off your "self", become free of yourself.
You don't know what God wants you to change in your behaviour, your attitudes or your words?
It's very easy, just start by doing what you know the Bible says. Love your neighbour! Forgive anyone who wrongs you, and don't fall in love with yourself by letting a sneaky selfishness get the better of you. Pride hides in the smallest recesses of our soul, and it's important to unmask it and put it to death. Self-centredness, which is found in extroverts as well as introverts, also needs to be put to death in our flesh.
These are just a few of the many obvious examples that everyone must put into practice if they define themselves as Christians.
Decide now to redeem the time in your life!
